Marjorie Aline Oglesby, 92, of Vincennes passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at home surrounded by family. She was born October 5, 1931, in Harrisburg, IL to W. G. and Juanita (Winters) Dutton.
Aline, as she was known to family and friends, grew up on a dairy farm. She was a 1948 graduate of Harrisburg Township High School and attended Southern Illinois University. While working at Kresge’s, she met the love of her life, Warren Oglesby, and they were married August 10, 1958.
After two years in Harrisburg, they lived in Louisville, KY; Newport News, VA; Tyler, Texas; Evansville, IN, and Bloomington, IN, before settling in Vincennes in 1965. A homemaker, Aline babysat in her home, bowled in several leagues, was a Girl Scout leader, and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She began listening to her beloved St. Louis Cardinals on the radio as a child and followed them throughout her life.
A long-time United Methodist, she was an active member of the former North United Methodist and Community United Methodist churches. Over the years, she was involved in the Mary Marthas, United Methodist Women, Crusaders Sunday School Class, Funeral Ministries, and served as Wedding Coordinator and Greeter Coordinator. Aline delivered bulletins and church service recordings to shut-ins and visited nursing homes. She volunteered with Kids Hope Ministry, mentoring several students at Vigo Elementary School.
Aline was an avid card sender and letter writer. Even in the last days of her life, she mentioned she needed to send cards to those who were ill or who had lost loved ones. She sent and received over 100 Christmas Cards each year, often that yearly correspondence the only communication with friends she hadn’t seen in decades.
She loved her friends, her neighborhood and longed for the old days of neighborhood picnics and knowing everyone on her street.
Aline had a talent for making everyone feel special. Her children and grandchildren were her life. Her eyes lit up when talking about her grandchildren and she was so proud of them. She volunteered in their classrooms and never missed a game, talent show, or dance recital.
Aline is survived by her son, Mark Oglesby, of Vincennes, her daughter, Lori Johnson (Charlie) of Evansville; grandchildren, Eric Johnson of Evansville, Logan Johnson of Bloomington, IN, Allison Johnson of Chicago, IL, and Emily Wilson (Ed Fritsch) of Indianapolis, IN, and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings Violet Dallas, Bill Dutton, Shirley Price, Larry Dutton, and Jim Dutton.
Visitation will be at Goodwin-Sievers Funeral Home on Thursday, September 5th from 4-8 P.M. and 12-1 P.M. on Friday, September 6th. Funeral service will be at 1 P.M. Friday at the funeral home with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery. Tony Burkhart will officiate.
Aline didn’t like all black attire funerals. Feel free to wear happy, bright colors, including her favorite yellow, or St. Louis Cardinals apparel.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s or Good Samaritan Hospice.
