Ellena A. Bridgewater, a cherished soul whose warmth and laughter touched many, passed away on April 2, 2025, at the age of 87 in Bloomington, Indiana. Ellena was born on April 21, 1937, in Brazil, Indiana to her parents Alfred and Lucy “McCullough” Rader.
Upon graduating from Brazil High School, Ellena devoted her life to the service of others, working both as a nurse’s aide at Clay Co. Hospital and as a beloved school cook at VanBuren Schools. She married her beloved husband, Larry E. Bridgewater, on October 28, 1958, beginning their loving family. Her commitment to her community was further demonstrated through her active membership at Croy’s Creek Christian Church and later, her attendance at Parkview Christian Church, where she practiced her faith and fellowship with conviction and joy.
Those who had the pleasure of knowing Ellena will fondly remember her for her exceptional rug weaving, her unrivaled sugar cookies, and her mastery of Scrabble. Her hobbies, which included cooking, Search-a-Word, jigsaw puzzles, and playing pranks, especially on April Fools, were outlets for her loving, funny, and creative spirit that endeared her to family and friends alike.
Ellena leaves a legacy of love and laughter through her children, Larry Bridgewater Jr. (Monique), Garland Bridgewater (Kristie), and Mary Bennington (Andrew). She was the doting grandmother to Elyse, Justin (Lizzie), Joshua, Jordan, Hannah, and Sarah, and was blessed to see the joy of her two great-grandchildren. She will be fondly missed by her siblings, Philip Rader and Beulah Hofmann. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Larry E. Bridgewater, her parents, and her brother, David Rader.
Ellena’s life was a beautiful tapestry of caring, connection, and an unforgettably playful humor. Her family takes comfort in knowing that her loving legacy will continue to weave through the generations. Ellena will be deeply missed yet forever celebrated as a beacon of light and love in the lives of those she touched.
There will be a service held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Parkview Christian Church officiated by Jon Bennington.
