Richard Alan Russell was born to James Russel Sr. and Beatrice I. “McCraney” Russell on May 10, 1953, in Washington, IN. Richard attended South Knox High School and earned his associate’s degree in education at Vincennes University in 1973. He achieved his bachelor’s degree in secondary education at the University of Southern Indiana in 1988. He received his master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008.
Richard claimed Bruceville, IN to always be his hometown, though he lived most of his adult life in Evansville, IN. After working many jobs, Richard found his occupation as a teacher. He taught at Mater Dei High School in Evansville, then moved to Evansville Central High School in 1990 where he remained until his retirement in 2013. He served as the drama director for eight years and the English Department chair for six years. He truly loved his students.
Richard is survived by his sister, Sandra Lafferty, his brother Dennis Russell (Susie), and Wendy Russell, his beloved youngest sister, and entirely too many nieces and nephews, along with great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. His older siblings, Jamie Luttrell, Lowell Russell, James C. Russell Jr., and Donald Russell preceded him in death.
There will be a visitation held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel. A service will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel, at 11:00 am with burial following immediately after at Royal Oak Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Central Drama Department, 5400 N. First Ave, Evansville, IN, 47710. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Bicknell Chapel, is honored to be entrusted with Mr. Russell’s arrangements.
