At this time, the General Assembly is considering at least a couple of bills with direct influence on municipal government.
The first bill is a move to shift the state’s municipal elections to the same year as Presidential elections. Right now, each municipal election is held on the odd years before the Presidential ballots are cast. Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum is against this move—and claims he isn’t alone.
The other big issue is a possible reduction in property taxes statewide. In some cases, municipal government leaders are worried those cuts wouldn’t leave them enough money to run their areas. Whatever way the bill is formed, Mayor Yochum doesn’t think the issue will go to a House-Senate conference committee…
The Legislature’s deadline to end its session on time in April 29th.
