Shirley Ann Wagoner, 87, a cherished matriarch and beacon of warmth in her community, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2024, in Washington, IN. Born on July 25, 1937, in Vincennes, IN, Shirley’s life was a testament to her unwavering love for her family and her zest for life.
Shirley’s journey began as the beloved daughter of Eloise
“Horsting” Cardinal and Clarence Cardinal. Her early years in Vincennes were filled with the love and camaraderie of her siblings, though she would eventually bid farewell to her parents, her husband Lloyd “Dale” Wagoner, whom she married on June 16, 1956, her infant daughter Benita Wagoner, her brothers James and Francis Cardinal, and her sisters Jean Bilskie, Betty Hess, and Rosemary Kaiser.
A 1955 graduate of St.Rose Academy, Shirley’s professional life was marked by her meticulous skills as a bookkeeper and her dedication as an office manager for Courter Appliances.
Her professional demeanor and attention to detail were matched only by her kindness and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Shirley’s heart was truly at home, where she was the loving mother to Greg Wagoner (Kate) of Lizton, IN, Sherri Shots (Larry) of Vincennes, IN, and Brenda Butcher (Bernie) of Washington, IN. Her legacy continued to flourish through her adored nine grandchildren Wendy Wagoner, Nicholas Wagoner, Rachael Kerschner, Sarah Bell, Christie Clayton, Annamarie Jacobs, Colton Butcher, Zachary Shots, and Jacquelyn Shots, as well as her fifteen great-grandchildren, who brought her immeasurable joy: Mason, Ethan, Bella, Sawyer, Adelynn, Grace, Harvey, Ruthie, Delilah, Jonathan, Malia, Shiloh, Gabriel, Liam (deceased), Kolbie, and Alexander.
An avid fan of Cardinals Baseball and Indiana University sports, Shirley’s enthusiasm for her teams was infectious. She found solace and joy in embroidering, creating beautiful pieces that will be treasured for generations. Shirley’s presence was a constant at her grandchildren’s functions where she was their most devoted fan. She relished time with her great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed the laughter of her family while playing cards (and winning).
Shirley’s love for life extended to the dance floor, where she and Dale were often found square dancing, a shared passion that kept their bond strong. Her community spirit shone brightly as one of the original founders of the Wing Nuts Motorcycle Club, where she fostered friendships and a sense of adventure. Shirley and Dale were avid travelers.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, and she served with grace and devotion at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Shirley’s commitment to service was further exemplified through her involvement with the Knox County Knights of Columbus Aux and St. Vincent’s Ladies Aux, where she contributed her time and talents generously.
The Wagoner family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the love and support shown during this time.
Shirley’s memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and laughter shared by those who loved her. Her spirit, like the embroidery she so lovingly crafted, will remain an intricate and beautiful part of the fabric of our lives.
There will be a visitation on Monday, September 30, 2024, from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at St Vincent Catholic Church with a service immediately following also at St Vincent Catholic Church with Father Tony Ernst and Father Gary Kaiser officiating. Burial will follow at Mt Calvary Cemetery.
