Alexandria “Alex” Nicole Gerkin, aged 32, passed away in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 13, 2024. Born on July 3, 1992, in Washington, Indiana, to her loving mother Angelique Rene Gerkin, whom loved Alex to the moon and back. Alex was a radiant spirit whose light shone brightly throughout her life.
Alex grew up in Shoals, where she attended Shoals Community Schools. Her zest for life and love for her family were evident from a young age. Throughout her life, Alex was known for her kind-hearted nature and her passion for the arts. She was an avid anime fan, often sharing her favorite series with friends and loved ones. Music was another of Alex’s great loves, and she held a special place in her heart for Panic at the Disco, whose melodies often served as the soundtrack to her life’s most memorable moments. In her adult life Alex worked mostly as a home health aide caring for her disabled mother.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by the love of her life, Evan Carnes, with whom she shared countless cherished memories and two dogs, Loki and MoMo; Her bond with Evan was built on a foundation of mutual respect, love, and a shared appreciation for the simple pleasures of life. Alex also leaves behind her brother, Nick Gerkin (Breanna), and her beloved cousin, Noah Gerkin, whom she considered a brother. Her half-sister, Melissa Dixon (Gordy), as well as her Aunt Misty Gerkin, and Uncle Shawn Gerkin, and considered Aunt Michelle Fuhrman will also hold her memory close to their hearts.
Alex’s extended family played a significant role in her life. Her Great Aunts Charlene Sims (Stanley), Cheryl Johnson Dickey (Eric), and Trudy Petrovich (Jim), were figures of unwavering support and love. Among the many cousins who cherished Alex, Anthony Edwards and his wife Candy Edwards stood out for their dedication and devotion, staying by her side throughout her journey and supporting her decision to give the gift of life through organ donation; she also leaves behind a stepmother, Cheryl Hovis.
Her other cousins, Kelly, Travis, Lena, and Jennifer, will remember Alex for her silliness, her willingness to listen, and her ability to make each family gathering a little brighter. Her loss is felt deeply by all who knew her, as she was a beacon of joy and kindness in their lives.
Alex was preceded in death by; her father, Billy Joe Carrico; stepfather, Mike Hovis; a cousin Chad Bauer; grandfather, Thomas Gerkin; grandmother, Judy Gerkin; Aunt Barbara Larabee; and great-grandfather Gordon Johnson and his wife Erma.
In her passing, Alexandria “Alex” Nicole Gerkin leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and courage. Her decision to donate her organs has bestowed hope and new beginnings upon others, an act that reflects the selflessness and compassion that defined her. Although her time with us was far too short, the impact she made on the world through her vibrant spirit and generous heart will endure.
Alexandria’s life was a testament to the beauty of human connection, the joy of shared passions, and the importance of cherishing every moment. Her memory will be treasured and kept alive in the stories shared by her loved ones, the music she adored, and the lives she touched.
As we say farewell to Alexandria “Alex” Nicole Gerkin, we celebrate the time we were given with her. Her journey was one of warmth, laughter, and love, and while we mourn her loss, we also honor the profound difference she made in the lives of so many. Alex’s spirit, now free and at peace, will forever be a guiding light in the hearts of those who loved her.

There will be a Memorial Visitation, Saturday, October 26, 2024 from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. with a brief service immediately following at 2:00 P.M. at Cornerstone Community Church in Shoals, IN, please feel free to wear any Halloween attire as that was Alex’s favorite holiday .
