Barbara “Barb” Jeanette (Dukes) Heines went to meet her Lord on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 after a brief illness. Barb was born July 9, 1937 to Lyman and Rebecca Olive “Sander”Dukes. She grew up on Brevort Farms. On August 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, Paul C. Heines. She tells us the story of when Paul brought her a small box that she thought were earrings, when she opened it, she found an engagement ring. They had many happy years together. She lost Paul on August 24, 1994.
Barb retired from Carter Lee Lumber Company in Indianapolis after 26 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she moved back home to Vincennes, IN. She immediately became involved with her beloved church, St. Franci Xavier Catholic Church – Sacred Heart Parish, volunteering for many things including being a member of the Alter Society. One of her highest honors and one she was most proud of was becoming a member of the Bruté Society. One of her favorite things to do at the church was to make rosaries for her church’s mission.
During her active years, she was a member of the Old Frenchtown Women’s Business Association and the Vincennes Xi Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority. Other memberships included: Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and the National Association of American Legion Auxiliary, Moose Women’s Auxiliary, and the National Association of Women in Construction. She made many lasting friendships during these meetings.
Barb had the privilege of visiting around the world on many excursions. Two of her greatest and most memorable trips were meeting the Pope at Vatican City and her African Safari. She loved her Wednesday and Sunday game days with Marlene Powell, Vickie Siewers, Norma Bar, and Ellen Lay.
While Barb and Paul were not blessed with children, they became second parents to many. Barb and Paul loved having so many of their nieces and nephews be a part of their lives. In recent years, a steady stream of nieces and nephews, and other friends and relatives showered her with love – giving back just a portion of what she gave to each of us. Barb was one of the kindest, most giving ladies. All who knew her loved her. She opened her home to many of us for varying reasons. We are truly blessed. Many of these nieces and nephews and other family stayed closed to her making sure she was spoiled and pampered. They included: Brenda Weinstock, Susie (Larry) Boyer, Tina Aayla, Cindy (Don) Beaman, Kevin (Lisa) Curry, JR (Sherry Rickard) Dunn, Charles (Tammy) Dunn, Sam Zollars, Sandy (Mike) Thompson, Michael Heines, Shawna Rippey, Cindy Sanders, Jennie Lee (Dukes) Kitchell, and Marilyn Rodriguez, as well as countless extended family and friends.
Special friends include neighbors Kelly and Greg Worland and Scott and Shelley Schnepper who always made sure to check in on her and love on her. Also a special young lady, Felicia Combs, who will became like a granddaughter to her. We can never repay all the love and care you ministered to Barb during this difficult time. Special thanks also go to Hannah Igel, Vickie Booth, Trisha Ochs, and others from the Good Samaritan Hospital Hospice who cared for Barb and took care of us as well.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul, and her siblings, Jack, Gene, Anna, Laura Mae, Jim, Gwendolyn “Gwen”, Sharon and Brenda.
Per Barb’s wishes, there will be a mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 11:00am officiated by Father Tony Ernst. Burial will follow at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Vincennes, IN, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Alter Society of the Rosary Committee or the Good Samaritan Hospice Group. Online condolences may be made to www.fredrickandson.com. Fredrick and Son McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Vincennes Chapel is honored to be entrusted with Mrs. Heines’ arrangements.
