Darla K. Groteguth, a soul marked by friendliness, love, and unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, in Freelandville, Indiana. Born on September 3, 1944, in Lawrenceville, Illinois, to John and Beulah “Mickey” McKeighan, Darla’s journey was one of joy, shared laughter, and service to others.
A resident of Indiana and Illinois, Darla lived a life that mirrored her values of family and community. She dedicated many years working at the cafeteria of North Knox East Elementary School, delighting in the daily buzz of children’s voices and the chance to be a part of their lives. Her marriage to Kenneth Groteguth on October 23, 1970, was a cherished chapter in her life. Though preceded in death by Kenneth, their legacy flourished in their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Darla’s warmth extended far beyond her immediate family. She is survived by her loving children, Troy (Angel), Tim (Julie), Brandon (Jessica), and Kyrah Bratton (Max). The delight of her ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren was a testament to her nurturing spirit. She is also survived by her siblings, John McKeighan (Rindy), Mic McKeighan (Kerry), and Sue McConnell (Kevin), who will miss her deeply.
A woman of varied interests, Darla collected Boyds Bears, treasured the music of Elvis, enjoyed Western movies, and had an affection for spending time with her family and friends. An ardent believer in the power of a well-kept home, she loved to clean, with doing laundry being a task she found particularly satisfying. Darla’s involvement with the Bonifidelis Club and the Sunshine Gals Club reflected her commitment to fellowship and service. Her presence at club meetings was always a source of joy and inspiration to her fellow members. Darla was also an active member of Mariah Creek Christian Church where she dedicated much of her time lifting up those around her and praising the Lord.
A high school graduate, Darla left a legacy of simplicity, care, and an open heart to everyone she encountered. Her memory will be held in the hearts of those who knew her as a loving, friendly, and faith-filled woman. Darla’s passing leaves an indelible imprint on her family and community, and she will be dearly missed.
